The Rules of Rebellion follows Kylie, a 17 year old introvert who loves to read. After her sister says that her life is boring, Kylie decides to make a list of rebellious things that she could do. Leo, one of her friends who happens to have a big crush on Kylie, finds the list and suggests helping her with the criteria.
I really loved this book. It was short but sweet. It contained everything that I wanted out of the story. Amity has a great writing style for contemporary fiction and she is also wonderful at creating fleshed out characters who you can easily love. Kylie was an interesting protagonist and I was relieved to find that she wasn’t a stereotypical one. I could relate to wanting to spend time indoors reading but she also wanted to enjoy her last year of high school and Leo helps give her the courage to do just that. The relationship with her sister Allie was an intriguing one, to see the secrets kept between sisters and their different thoughts and emotions, as well as the growing bond with opinions being aired and realisations occurring. We get to see a lot of different relationships in this book; various familial relationships, as well as relationships from male and female point of views. This book is told from two perspectives; Kylie and Leo. It was easy to know which perspective was which, in both dialogue and chapters where you may have otherwise forgotten which perspective they were told from.
I also enjoyed reading about hobbies and careers which I feel is something important but is not always talked about in young adult novels.
Kylie and Leo’s relationship was portrayed well. Leo has had a crush on Kylie for a long time but he was afraid to act on it. Kylie never saw him as more than a friend, until now. It is not instant love but the relationship grows organically as they spend more time together and find out how much they have in common. I found Leo to be a good love interest and I enjoyed reading about their growing relationship from their different perspectives.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. It did not take me long to read but it instantly pulled me in and didn’t let me go even after the last page. I had to keep reading to see what happened and that is when I know that I have found a good book. I have nothing negative to say about this book, there is nothing that I thought could be improved upon. I actually want to read more of Amity’s books after this. I am sad that Kylie and Leo’s story is over and I would love to see a sequel. It would also be interesting to read about the relationships of Kylie’s friends and her sister too. There is so much more that Amity could do with these characters and that is a great compliment. If you like contemporary/romance novels or you are just looking to read a nice romance then I would definitely recommend this to you.
