Hi everyone! I wanted to do an update post with my current reading, gaming and anime plans. Let me know if you have read, played or watched any of these!
I am currently listening to the audiobook for Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. This is Brandon Sanderson's latest release. It is a YA sci-fi, following Spencer, a girl whose father was in the flight squad that protect the people from the enemy known as the Krell. He never returned from a mission and people deemed him a coward, leaving a stain on the family. Spencer wants to become a pilot like her father and at the beginning of the book she is to take the test for flight school. I'm about a quarter of the way through the audiobook. It is narrated well by Sophie Aldred. The story so far is interesting and very character-driven.
I was kindly sent a copy of Mera: Tidebreaker to review. It is written by Danielle Paige and illustrated by Stephen Byrne. I read Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige and quite enjoyed it. This graphic novel is a retelling of the DC ocean Princess, Mera which is so cool!
I wanted a physical book to read during a commute. Something that wouldn't take up too much room in my bag but something that I would actually read. I searched my shelves for short books and I was drawn to Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. This is a book that I have been wanting to read for a while. I have seen the Studio Ghibli adaptation of the book but this differed, at least slightly, from its source content. The book follows, Sophie, the eldest of three daughters who is doomed to be the most unfortunate due to being the eldest sibling. Simultaneously, a wizard has moved into the hills adjacent to Sophie's village. He lives in an actual moving castle, with long legs lifting it from the ground, that can be seen from a distance. It is said that Howl consumes the hearts of young women. I am not too far into the book but I do know quite a bit about the story. This book is a classic children's fantasy which features magic, character growth and love. It is followed by Castle in the Air and House of Many Ways.
There are two other books that I recently started and would like to finish, these are Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson and The Surface Breaks by Louise O' Neill. These are two books that were intriguing, I just ended up putting them down for review copies and because I felt like reading something different on my commute. I aim to read these two books soon.
I am currently playing The World Ends with You: Final Remix on Nintendo Switch. I played the original game on Nintendo DS and loved it. This edition features a new storyline and it is so far awesome on the Switch. This game follows players in a game. They have pins which they use to battle and they have timed challenges which they have to achieve or they will be 'erased'. I absolutely loved the storyline in this game when I first played it and I am looking forward to experiencing that again.
I have been watching quite a lot of anime recently, here are the two series that I am currently watching:
Erased follows Satoru, a man who discovers that he can go back in time. When he was a child, a girl was abducted and murdered. The murderer then reappears in the current day. Satoru is taken back to when he was a child and we see him attempt to save the girl and discover the identity of the murderer in order to change events.
As someone who loves time travel stories, this is a compulsive anime that I would definitely recommend.
Another anime that I recently started watching is Bungo Stray Dogs. This anime follows characters with abilities, that are unlike anything I have ever heard of. There is a detective agency which works against the Port Mafia, gifted individuals who aim to harm others. We follow a large cast of characters but the main character is a boy named Atsushi. This anime is comical, emotional and very strong. We see the development of each character that we are introduced to along the way. We find out about their pasts and about the growth of their abilities. I am almost finished with season 2, I watched many episodes close together and this is another anime that I would recommend. If you like fantasy animes or stories you should check this out.
