Thousands of children will be taking exams this year after what has been a very challenging, topsy-turvy year. If you have kids who will be sitting exams in the coming months, this guide contains tips to help children prepare.Encourage open conversation
It’s natural for children to have worries and concerns about their studies, especially when exams are looming. You can help your kids to prepare mentally and increase confidence and reduce stress by encouraging open conversation. Talk to your kids about how school is going, ask questions about the subjects they’re studying and make sure they know that they can come to you if they’re finding it tough or they have questions or concerns. Check in on a regular basis and make sure you’re there to listen if they want to talk.
Help where you can
If your kids have questions about their school work, or they need help with homework or assignments, try to help out where you can. Assist them with identifying solutions and working problems out, offer cues and clues to help them find answers and offer explanations if they’re struggling to understand concepts, ideas or theories. Don’t panic if you don’t know the answer to a question or you can’t solve an equation. Speak to your child’s teacher and see if it’s possible for them to go through the assignment or activity with your child so that they gain a better understanding. It can also be beneficial to utilise online resources and to seek advice from friends or family members who have experience in education and may be able to explain better.
Consider extra tuition
Every child is different and some approach exams with much more confidence than others. If your child is struggling with a certain subject, they’re anxious about doing exams and this is affecting their performance at school, or they’re behind, it’s a good idea to consider getting extra help from a facility like a private tuition centre or to try and arrange additional support with the help of your child’s teachers. Small group sessions and one-to-one tutoring can help children to understand subjects they find difficult, catch up, increase confidence and reduce stress leading up to the exam period.
Offer reassurance and avoid stress and pressure
Exams affect people in different ways. Some will thrive under pressure, while others may crumble or feel very anxious. If your child is doing exams soon, offer reassurance, avoid putting pressure on them and try to encourage them to take time out to relax and de-stress. Build their confidence and let them know that all they can do is try their best. It can be helpful to talk to your kids before their exams and make sure that they know that it’s not the end of the world if they don’t get incredible grades.
The prospect of doing exams and tests is daunting for most people. If you have kids sitting exams in the months ahead, there are steps you can take to try and prepare them and help them to stay calm and relaxed.
