Review:
Aru Shah and the End of Time follows Aru, a girl who makes up stories. One of these stories results in her touching a lamp that no one is allowed to touch which wakes a demon. Aru, her soul sister, Mini and a guardian stuck as a pigeon, have a limited number of days to stop the end of the world.
This book had been on my shelf for so long. I decided it was time to pick it up and how I wish I had picked it up earlier! This is a wonderful middle grade fantasy, filled with lyrical writing, humour and Indian mythology. I really enjoyed learning about all of the characters from Indian mythology and the different concepts. All of these stories made the worldbuilding of this book very rich and deep. It felt like this whole world could actually exist! Our main characters were interesting and well developed, each with their own qualities and flaws. The characters felt like 12 year olds trying their best, and feeling afraid.
The only negatives I could really find in this book were that there was an over-use of real life references which I didn't always enjoy and sometimes it was very convenient how Aru would think of a solution to a problem that was something you wouldn't typically conceive.
However, despite this, I really enjoyed this book! It was a brilliant middle grade fantasy with a complex world, magic and questions that haven't all been answered.
This is the first book in a series and I am so excited to read the rest of the books. If you are looking for a middle grade fantasy series, I would highly recommend checking this out.
My rating: 5/5 stars
This book looks like it would interest me. I liked to make up stories when I was little as well.
