Review:
In The Hatmakers we are introduced to a unique and creative magical world set in England in the past but with a difference: there are families who make magical clothes and accessories that impact the wearer. Items that can make you feel brave or calm or sleep and so many other things. Cordelia is the youngest hatmaker. Her father has gone missing and strange things start happening. With a war looming, can Cordelia find her father and work out what is going on?
I adored this story. The idea felt so unique and like something that should have been done before. Cordelia was a wonderful main character. A young girl who loves learning about magic and hatmaking, who loves her family and is a great friend. It was nice to see a strong family presence in this book. Every element of the story wove so well to create an emotional and clever plot.
Throughout reading, I felt several different emotions and even though I predicted some of the plot correctly, I was still shocked or mad or sad when something happened. I loved seeing the different friendships and relationship dynamics. The materials used for making the clothes and accessories were fascinating and it almost felt like this world could be out there somewhere, or have existed in the past.
There was humour throughout the book mixed in with deeper emotional events. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in The Hatmaker world and I am looking forward to reading the sequel which comes out in 2022.
