Guest Post: How do chronic illnesses co-exist: a look at ehlers-danlos syndrome and bipolar disorder by Kayla Knight

I deal with two chronic conditions known as ehlers-danlos syndrome hypermobility type and bipolar disorder type one. Chronic conditions are diagnosed by the severity and longevity of symptoms. A chronic condition must affect your life everyday or most days for more than six months. Dealing with two chronic conditions makes it difficult to function everyday and can have devastating consequences if left untreated.

Chronic pain is a broad term. Everyone experiences pain differently. Some deal with pain from an injury, such as breaking your arm. Others are born with conditions, such as arthritis, that cause widespread pain without an easy fix. My experience with chronic pain is uncommon. I dealt with daily pain and thought it was normal. As it turns out, daily pain without some kind of injury, is abnormal. The reason I deal with chronic pain is due to a condition called ehlers-danlos syndrome hypermobility type that causes joint instability, widespread chronic pain, and subluxation (partial dislocation of joints).

Enhancing French Lessons With Your Child

This is a collaborative post and it may contain affiliate links

Are you in the process of helping your child learn French? Whether it’s because you have any plans to emigrate or you simply want to make sure that your child has the experience of learning another language, it’s a very admirable thing to teach. However, while rote memorization and repetition are important, it’s not the only way to learn. Here, we’re going to look at a few ways you can enhance those French lessons, bringing new dimensions to them that might make them stick a little more easily.

The virtual approach

Rather than going back and forth with each other, a great way to make sure that you’re broadening the language learning experience for your child is to incorporate some of the language apps that can help teach them in a different way. This can include apps that are all about helping expand and practice their vocabulary, others that focus more on grammar and proper pronunciation, and even those that have some games to make learning more engaging than pure memorization.

Engage with French media

If you ask many people who speak English as a foreign language how they managed to get so fluent, one of the most common responses you will hear is that they spent a lot of time dipped into English-speaking media. You can do the same for your child with French cartoons, French movies, French fairy tales, and you can even look up some of the more popular French kid’s YouTube channels to find content that helps them glean and absorb more and more of the language together.

How To Get Closer To Your Child

This is a collaborative post and it may contain affiliate links

If you're a parent, you've probably had the feeling that your child no longer needs you as much as they once did. Even if this isn't intentional, it can cause a chasm between you and your little – or not so little – one.

We don't need things to be this way. There will come a time when the distance between you and your child will naturally widen, but in the meantime, assuming it's too soon for that, here are some suggestions to help you draw closer to your child now.

After settling on the island of Aria, he receives an unexpected contract: The lost princess of Aria was discovered living in the port town of Brighton, on the outskirts of the island Kingdom.

A trip to the markets in Brighton ends abruptly as Liya Fairaway stumbles into Jase. She vanishes in the busy marketplace when Jase realizes who she is, the lost princess of Aria and the bearer of the 13th Zodiac: Eternity. And his target.

Something ancient pulls them together, a bond that neither can deny. Reluctantly at first, Jase joins Liya and the other Zodiac to end the threat of Soren Raion, the King of Chall.

Time is not on their side, and Fate has other plans.

"I enjoyed the fight scenes and the supernatural themes. Another interesting development was the relationship between two people who are supposed to be enemies: Liya and Jase. The ending was immensely satisfying and rewarding. The worldbuilding was also great, for example, the idea that man was made with soil from the Titan of Urth and breath from the Titan of Sky." - Reader's favorite

"I loved this book! A wonderful and engaging page turner aimed at children/young teens that is full of great characters and imagery but also contains lots of important and positive messages!" - Owen Hollifield

Hew had always dreamt of being a knight. Take that, villain! Yes, princess, of course I'll rescue you. Thank you, your Majesty, yes I am great with a sword. Unfortunately, being a farmer's son made that dream impossible. Real life was more about cleaning animal mess and checking for weeds.

Until he met the dragon.

It opened up a hidden world of magic around him. Faeries. Hobgoblins. Monsters, shape changers, brownies; you name them, he met them.

But there was a problem.

A blight to the north was making magic fade from the Earth. If it disappeared completely, then everyone would freeze to death.

Yes, that included Hew's annoying little sister, but even she didn’t deserve to be frozen. He would have to be brave and defeat this blight. The question was…

What could a nearly eleven-year-old do?

The Magus were the protectors of magic, armed with a magic caster's power and a warrior's strength. They were able to summon magical weapons from specialized caches they wore as armored pauldrons known as the Armory of Attlain. The Magus were legendary among the people of Attlain until a few decided they should lead the people instead of protecting them. The rebellion ended quickly from within their ranks, but the damage was done. The Magus were feared and outlawed except for those few who remained loyal to the crown and lived as adventurers. For generations, they had all but disappeared from the world. Marcus Gideon awoke at the crossroads outside the border town of Armändis. Henry Botàn was a Magus, hiding out in Armändis to protect the weapons within his magical armory. The swords, spears, and other-worldly artifacts were potent, some cursed and even forbidden to wield. His responsibility was to protect these weapons from falling into the wrong hands, but he was old and past his prime. He needed an apprentice, and Marcus Gideon may be the one he waited for. As Gideon searches for clues to his past, he looks toward his future and his fate in Attlain as THE LAST MAGUS.

Dragons ruled the sky, werewolves roamed the forests, and vampires owned the night. But humans are resilient, and they learned to survive.

Kids were taught the new rules of life; look both ways when you cross the road, don’t go out after dark, never look a werewolf in the eyes, and if you see a dragon, you run and hide.

Abandoned as a child, she managed to carve out her own slice of life. Working as a bounty hunter, she deals with werewolves, vampires, and dragons on a daily basis.

Author Interview: Ellie Yarde, Romance Author

1. Please introduce yourself (who are you, what genre/s do you write in, what books do you have out)

Hello! My name is Ellie Yarde, and I am a writer/blogger. I write in a lot of genres, but I would say my main ones are romance, fantasy and young adult. I have almost endless first chapters, waiting for me to get around to write the rest of the book. I have two books out, both are romance, young adult, short stories from the same series – Escape the Choice and Embrace the Choice. They are both standalone books. The main characters are roommates at university, Ali and Lena. I am working on book 3, which is about the third roommate, Kyra.

2. What are your favourite books?

This is a difficult questions, because I find it very hard to decide which books I like over others. When I was younger, my favourite book was Black Beauty, and I actually have three different copies of that book. I was a little obsessed. Now, I am not sure. The book I have read the most (other then my own when editing!) would probably be The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. I took it on holiday once, and made the mistake of only taking that book, because I didn’t have any room in my bag to take any more, and hadn’t yet discovered the joy of e-books. I think I read it about seven times that week.

Treasures and Trinkets: A Dragon's Brood Tale (The Dragon's Brood Cycle)

Before she was a prisoner in Marianne's crystal mines or just another face among the multitudes in the city of Seven Skies, Maddy had a different name and everything she could want—governesses, gowns, and gold to fill her pockets. And though she wasn't the son her father had wanted, it was inevitable that one day she would inherit his title.

But Maddy's predictable world is turned upside down when an extraordinary servant girl challenges everything she's ever known; there's a wider world beyond the comfortable confines of her castle, full of wonder and magic, and Maddy finds that the one thing she doesn't have is the only thing she really needs.

Author Interview: Karen Telling, author of two memoirs about living in Portugal

1. Please introduce yourself (who are you, what genre/s do you write in, what books do you have out)
I have written two memoirs of our move to, and life in Portugal.

2. What are your favourite books?
As a child I loved Ballet Shoes, as an adult The Book Thief, The Historian, and Labyrinth

3. When did you know you wanted to be an author?
I have always loved books and writing stories, I didn’t think I would actually achieve publication though.

4. What is your favourite part of the writing process?
When it flows easily and you see the word count growing. Editing and marketing

5. What is your writing routine?
I write in short bursts, usually no more than an hour at a time. I am disabled and write flat on my back, on my phone, with two thumbs.

6. How do you balance writing (and everything else to do with it) with the rest of your life?
I am disabled and retired so can write whenever I feel like it.

7. What inspires you? How do you beat writers block?
So far I’ve been inspired by memories and the kindness of strangers. If I get stuck I move to another part of the story and then go back to it later.

8. How do you keep consistent/write a lot?
I write 30-60 minutes, 2-3 times a day.

9. Does anyone read or edit your work before publication? If so, how did you find them?
I have several beta readers, one of whom proofreads, then I employ a professional editor.

10. Can we have a sneaky look at your future plans?
I’m considering fiction, I have several ideas vying for space, and maybe even childrens books.

11. Finally, what advice would you give to other writers (inspiring, those publishing and those published)?
Just write, you can’t edit a blank page.

From funny and uplifting to reflective and sometimes downright depressing this poetic and colorful picture book offers quick glimpses into the author's life and mind. While not always a pretty sight, each illustrated 13-word poem is highly relatable and thought-provoking.

Not taking himself too seriously, in the first of 72 fully illustrated poems the author promises:
"If your looking for meaning behind these words, you'll find a blank page."

Personal and revealing, in one poem the author explains that:
"Secrecy is too tiring so I tell everyone everything; especially the most embarrassing."

A couple pages later he confesses:
"Twisted and tortured in mind, body, and soul, I heroically begin another day."

An adult poetry and picture book.

Beth Mac: Part One (GRIM Book 1)

Whether it's the battlefield or the football field, Beth Mac is relentless.

Adored as much as she's feared, Corporal Elizabeth Mackenzie is nothing short of a full-blown enigma. Once awarded the Medal of Honour for her bold and arguably reckless efforts as a soldier, she eventually finds herself inching toward a different type of pedestal — one at Saint Judah's College.

With her eyes on the prize, she's on a mission to take the captaincy, whatever the cost. And one by one her competition violently fall.

Luckily, for Beth Mac, a doting boyfriend and a band of followers are far too easily manipulated for her to have to get her hands dirty. The school has its bets on the Grim Reaper being responsible. After all, that's who carried out the murderous rampage at the school just the year before.

Full of all your classic sorority debauchery, Part One will take you on a journey of mysterious happenings with a down-under twist and a whole lot of slaughter. Bloody, witty and outrageously mad, it's Macbeth like you've never seen it before.

Do you like reading science fiction books? Well here are a bunch of sci-fi books written by indie authors that you need to check out!

Dust & Lightning

In the near future, humans have gone beyond simple space travel. By the year 4054, multiple solar systems are inhabited, and taking a spaceship is as commonplace as taking an aeroplane.

Unfortunately, not everything about the future is so advanced. The central planets, led by Earth, have risen high at the expense of cheap labour on distant worlds. Dissent is widespread and arrests are common. Sometimes prisoners are released; sometimes they disappear without a trace, sent to labour camps in other solar systems.

When Ames Emerys receives a letter telling him that his brother Callum has died en route to the remote planet of Kilnin, he takes the first ship he can off Earth, desperate for answers. But the secrets Ames uncovers prove far more dangerous than he could have imagined.

And trouble isn’t far behind.

Once upon a time, inhabitants of another world tore a hole through the universe and came to Earth. They called themselves Suriias, and rivalled humans in knowledge and skill with one great exception: they had magic.

War followed. Humanity lost. And three hundred years later, humans are on the brink of extinction.

Orphans Thorn and Thistle live in hiding. They are the last of their families, the last of their friends. They scrape by, stealing to survive and living on the streets or hiding in sheds. But even under the brutal regime of the Suriias, there are places where humans can mingle in secret with magical sympathisers, and one night Thistle gets an unexpected offer of marriage from a Suriia with high standing and friends in all the right places. For Thistle, it’s a chance at safety and comfort; for Thorn, it’s a chance to find the ones who killed her parents.

And so the pair move into the capital city of Courtenz. An urban monstrosity of magic and might, false friends and flying cars, drones and death tolls, the new city promises a fresh start – and new love – for both.
